Summer in Nevada City

It’s really starting to feel like summer in town! With temperatures rising, it’s a great time to hit the Yuba River. We went to a little swimming hole this week and made rock art!

In the back patio at the inn, the daisies are in full bloom! They look amazing growing right above the fire pit. There are so many that we added some to the bouquet from Magickal Florist in the front office.

You can kick off summer by watching the Soap Box Derby on Nimrod St. by Pioneer Park tomorrow from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Don’t forget that Fathers’ Day is on Sunday! Celebrate by bringing dad (and the whole family, really) to the 52nd Annual Nevada City Bicycle Classic, starting at 1:00 p.m. with the Juniors race and the Pros starting at 5:00 p.m. To really make dad happy, bring him to the Pre-Race Brewery Party at the Ol’ Republic Brewery behind SPD.

Nevada City Bike Classic and Soapbox Derby

This weekend, the first annual Adult Soapbox Derby is taking place in Pioneer Park the day before the 51st annual Nevada City Bicycle Classic. The Soapbox Derby is a family friendly event as a fundraiser for the benefit of Pioneer Park. The goal is to make all of the changes within one year so that, in hopes of making this an annual event, the changes can be seen at next year’s derby. There is a lot of work and effort going on behind this event to make it fun, green, and family friendly. You can read more about it on the derby website or at the Nevada City Chamber site This year, the Nevada City Bicycle Classic is celebrating its 51st anniversary. As always, the race will take place on Fathers’ Day, which is June 19, 2011. The Classic is the largest and oldest bike race on the West Coast, and second oldest in the country. The race starts at 1:00 p.m. and will come to a close sometime around 6:30 p.m. The cyclists wind their way through historic Nevada City and whiz right by Broad Street Inn. Broad Street, East Broad, and a few other streets will be closed on Sunday for most of the day. Spring Street and West Broad will remain open. This poster is based on an original design created by David Osborn and Charles Woods in the 1960s. Osborn/Woods made significant contributions to Nevada City through their vision and work in architectural restoration, historic preservation and graphic design. In their memory, this year’s poster and logo have been recreated and produced by Robert Stelson and LeeAnn Brook. More information about the race is available from the Nevada City Chamber, the Nevada City Bicycle Classic, and the Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop. A breakdown of the tour times is available here.
